More Thinking, Less Doing...For Now

Oh, friend.

Oh, friend.

I feel like I don’t even know where the last week went. It definitely did not go into writing. I’m still thinking about the story, but that’s not the same. Maybe I’m worried about writing badly.

But you know what? Writing badly is a necessity. We need the awful story so we can turn it into the amazing story.

I recently signed up for Ela Thier’s Directing the Camera course, and as a bonus I’ve received access to writing sessions. Having other people writing at the same time definitely provides accountability, and the approach is all about getting words on pages instead of thinking and editing and getting in your own way. So I’m optimistic about the future.

But JMC, you may be asking, why are you taking a directing course?

Great question! Films are just stories in pictorial form. And I’d love to direct a movie (or several). And I’d love to write some screenplays, especially based on my own novels. And there are novels I love that I’d love to turn into movies.

That’s a lot of love.

Plus, you never know where you’re going to learn something new that builds on things you already know. There could be, and likely are, significant nuggets of wisdom in shot planning that can inform how to write a novel. Because novels are a series of scenes, just as films are. Novels are about relationships, just as films are. Novels are stories, just as films are.

I’m a dreamer, friend. And proud of it. Because dreaming is the first step to creating reality.
